Nestled in the heart of a village in the rugged landscape of the Monts d'Ardèche, La Montée is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the transmission of painting – understood as thought, gesture and craft.

Founded in 2026, the association builds on teaching initiatives that have been underway for several years in Marion Bataillard’s studio.

Its mission is to offer short and long-term learning sessions, workshops and residencies.

Oil, egg, casein, dammar resin, hide glue, beeswax, lime: we work with raw, natural materials

We draw on traditional skills, which we apply with a contemporary perspective. Mastery embraces experimentation.

We advocate a technical approach that is both demanding and non-prescriptive.

We place great importance on working from life, on observing the visible without systematic recourse to photographic mediation. For we approach the subject as a place of experience, and not merely as a model to be reproduced.

The programme is open to related disciplines: sculpture, printmaking, screen printing, manufacture of supports...

We are reviving a tradition of organic, peer-to-peer learning.

During the privileged time spent sharing studio life in small groups, we cultivate a spirit of critical camaraderie. Judgement is formed through discussions and, at times, disagreements, in the face of assertive subjectivities.

We draw inspiration from both contemporary and classical visual culture. To paint is to engage in dialogue with history as well as with the present, and we will study Giotto just as much as Kerry James Marshall, Otto Dix, De Kooning, Tintoretto or Nicole Eisenman.

The various modules of the programme are led by Marion Bataillard, and will soon also be led by other artists possessing unique expertise.
