La Montée is a place of transmission and slow pace, centered around painting.
It is located in the steep, wild land of the Monts d’Ardèche, in the climb of the village of Saint-Pierreville.
Here, we are reviving a tradition of organic, peer-to-peer learning.
La Montée is now a nonprofit organization. Its program is called to evolve based on affinities. It is open to related disciplines. It invites artists to teach, learn, and hike.
ABOUT TECHNIQUE
A technique is not neutral. It shapes form, thought, and our relationship to the world.
Painting often involves grappling with complex technical challenges. This challenge is fruitful, it takes part to creation.
La Montée offers a demanding approach without beeing prescriptive.
Mastery embraces the experimental.
ABOUT MATERIALITY
Oil, egg, casein, dammar resin, hide glue, beeswax, hide glue : we work with raw, natural materials.
We are commited to understand materials and their possible combinations.
ABOUT FIGURATION
I advocate for a non-image figuration.
I place great importance on working from life, on observing the visible form the body, without systematic recourse to photographic mediation.
For the subject is a site of experience, not merely a model to be reproduced.
ABOUT HISTORICAL CONTINUITY
We draw upon ancient techniques, which we apply with a contemporary perspective.
We draw inspiration from both contemporary and classical visual culture.
To paint is to engage in a dialogue with history as well as with the present, and we will study Kerry James Marshall as well as Giotto, Otto Dix, Vincent Bioulès or Jacob Jordaens.
ABOUT CAMARADERIE
During the special time spent sharing studio life in small groups, we cultivate a spirit of critical camaraderie.
Thought takes shape through discussions and sometimes disagreements, in the presence of assertive individual perspectives.
